What is the main difference between hydrophobic and hydrophilic capsule filters?
Hydrophobic filters repel water and are ideal for gas/air and solvent filtration; hydrophilic filters attract water and suit aqueous solutions. PTFE is the common hydrophobic material, while PES or PVDF are typical hydrophilic options.
Can this filter be used for both gas and liquid filtration?
Yes. It excels at gas/air sterilization and also filters non-aqueous liquids. It is not suitable for water-based liquids, as water will not wet the hydrophobic membrane.
Is the filter autoclavable? What are the sterilization conditions?
Yes. It can be autoclaved at 121°C for 30 minutes, up to 10 times. It also supports ethylene oxide (EtO) sterilization for single-use applications.
How to perform an integrity test on the hydrophobic capsule filter?
Common methods are bubble point and diffusion test. For 0.2 μm PTFE, the typical bubble point is ≥2.8 bar (40.6 psi). Each filter is pre-tested at the factory.
What is the maximum operating temperature and pressure?
Continuous operating temperature: -20°C to 80°C. Maximum differential pressure: 5 bar (72.5 psi) at 25°C. Avoid exceeding these limits to prevent membrane damage.
Are the materials FDA-compliant for food and pharmaceutical contact?
Yes. The PTFE membrane and PP housing meet FDA 21 CFR Part 177 requirements for food contact, ensuring low extractables and no contamination.
How long can a hydrophobic capsule filter last in service?
Service life depends on application. For gas venting, it can last 3–6 months; for high-particulate solvents, it may need replacement in 2–4 weeks. Replace when pressure drop rises sharply.
Can the filter be reused after cleaning?
No. It is designed for single use. Reuse risks contamination, membrane damage, and loss of sterility. Dispose of properly after use to ensure process safety.
